Denis Urek · Radovljica, Slovenia

Platform / DevOps Engineer

I build and operate applications, delivery pipelines and infrastructure automation end to end. I also write the hands-on training labs that teach the same systems.

Evidence at a glance

~10,000 registrations / year

Rebuilt a manual registration site as a self-service platform.

Database, admin UI, automated reports, RabbitMQ workers, CI/CD and deployment. Scale is my estimate.

~10,000 spreadsheet lines

Removed hand translation from network configuration work.

A web-accessible automation maps server and switch data from Excel to JSON and sends it to a master-configuration app.

~25–30 labs authored

Built the systems and wrote the training that teaches them.

Hands-on material across OpenShift AI, Kubernetes networking, Linux hardening and agentic AI. Count is my estimate.

~5 daysto~1 for one task

Made a recurring delivery workflow faster and more consistent.

AI-assisted workflow built against a golden example. This is my estimate for that task, not a company-wide metric.

Experience

Outcomes lead; role, employer, place and dates remain directly underneath for verification.

Current role

Turned a hand-edited registration site into a self-service, queue-backed platform.

DevOps / Software Engineer · Flint SI (part of Flint International) · Ljubljana, Slovenia

I own internal and customer-facing systems from application code through delivery and ongoing operations, and contribute hands-on certification-training content as a subject-matter expert.

  • ~10,000 registrations a year now run through the platform I rebuilt. Static JSON became a database-backed application with staff self-service, four automated report types per event, and an estimated several hours of admin work removed each week. Both figures are my estimates.
  • Made failed sign-ups, emails and calendar invites recoverable. RabbitMQ workers return failed jobs to the queue for logging and retry instead of losing them.
  • Removed manual translation from ~10,000-line configuration workbooks. Built a web-accessible Excel-to-JSON automation for server and switch data, using Claude Code heavily because of the data volume.
  • Made repeatable delivery the default path. GitLab CI/CD builds and deploys containers to security-hardened Linux VMs; Ansible or Terraform is chosen per stack, and Grafana covers the production VMs I own.
  • Authored ~25–30 hands-on labs and cut one recurring task from roughly five days to one. The lab count and time saving are my estimates. I also administer Claude Code for the organisation, advise colleagues on adoption, and proctored the CTF at Cisco Live Amsterdam 2025.

Established repeatable CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code practices for internal services.

Junior DevOps / Software Engineer · Flint SI · Ljubljana, Slovenia

The first year at Flint moved quickly from onboarding into ownership of development, deployment and maintenance work.

  • Designed and implemented CI/CD pipelines for internal services.Build and deployment work moved into a repeatable delivery path.
  • Led internal tools through development, deployment and maintenance.Responsibility extended beyond writing code to keeping the services running.
  • Built infrastructure with infrastructure-as-code practices. Also onboarded with Cisco NSO for telecom development.

Built an open-source update monitor that reached roughly 100 community servers.

Freelance Developer · Independent · Slovenia

Automation projects grew out of operating a modded community server and solving the failures that affected its users.

  • Warned server operators before Workshop updates broke sessions. The Steam Workshop Monitor reached roughly 100 servers, the pre-verification ceiling. It is early code, kept as an origin story rather than current best work.
  • Built practical Python automation and Discord integrations.Public work includes the Workshop monitor and a Telegram-to-Discord update bridge.
  • Kept a personal infrastructure practice running alongside client work.Used VMware, Docker, CI/CD and Linux administration; the homelab started in 2021 and still hosts this site.

– Oct 2021

Turned first hands-on server work into a homelab practice that still runs today.

IT Student · Spletina d.o.o. · Slovenia

This was my first paid professional IT environment and the point where classroom foundations became daily support work.

  • Diagnosed, serviced and repaired computers for real users.Provided day-to-day IT support alongside the hardware work.
  • Built practical foundations in virtualization and networking.Worked with VMware, basic networking and WordPress maintenance; access to a physical server started the homelab habit.

Self-directed

Kept a modded server in sync for 30–40 concurrent players, twice a week, for roughly five years.

Community Server Operator · Self-directed · Online community

Unpaid operations work began four years before my first professional IT role. Player counts and cadence are my own figures.

  • Owned a recurring service from provisioning through maintenance.Ran the dedicated Windows Server box, mod set, update rollouts and client synchronization solo.
  • Built the supporting communication systems around it.Also operated a self-hosted TeamSpeak 3 server and Discord bots for the group.
  • Turned an operational pain point into a public tool. The update burden directly produced the Steam Workshop Monitor above.

Certifications

Kubestronaut, achieved September 2024. The Linux Foundation umbrella award for holding all five Kubernetes credentials below at the same time; it is not a sixth exam. I am not renewing the components as they expire, so this is an achievement earned in 2024 rather than an actively maintained status.
